Doilies

This is a doily from an older publication.

This is a doily from a newer publication.

What is you opinion about the designs?

What do you like or dislike about them?

Do you know why you feel that way about them?

Edited to add a doily made from motifs.

They are virtually identical, except that the older doily has a many picots and is more lacy. The newer one has more negative space and seems more spare.

They both have their merits - it's just a matter of taste. I personally prefer the older doily, as it suits my design style a bit better - I'm a bit more cluttered and enjoy the frills more.

It just doesn't look "finished" in the more modern version - I like the picots!

I like tatting to be very frilly! The modern one reminds me of a fisherman's net. And, course, a little variation from row to row is nice. They are both very nice though! My opinion is a bit biased, as a tatter, who finds anything tatted, exquisite. (:

I agree with the previous comments. The newer one definitely looks less finished, less polished. I think the older one was also blocked and the newer one not. The newer one also looks a bit wonky to me, not as even looking as the older one. I too prefer the older one. I like doilies, how they look and how they protect furniture tops from the various articles we place on them.

I like the older one because I like picots....to me picots can make or break a design. To be honest the second doily looks very boring to me. I wouldn't tat it. I would think, "What's the point?" it would be a waste of time and effort to me. I only like to tat patterns that are visually appealling to me and that would be torture. WOW I am being brutally honest here... LOL! I guess I am a traditional tatter by style and taste! I mean sometimes you DO need a chain with no picots for a particular reason...for instance I am making Martha Ess's block critter cat and there very few picots. I am on the tail right now (the very beginning chain) and there are no picots on it... it would look really silly with a bunch of picots on it...
Anyway the bottom picture with the motifs put together for the doily/centerpiece is absolutely gorgeous! WOW!

I love this one. Very nicely done. My group just started a new thing..We all had to make a motif and now each month it moves to the next person and we have to add something onto it. A challenge for me as I have never done any designing at all. On top of it, I want to add something Celtic, which means two rows. I might have to change my mind on that....

I'm a sheep on this one - I like the older one better; but I tend to make my picots more "lacy". However, on both counts - I've tried two doilies that were mostly chains around a center, & have never been able to get them to come out without being kind of wonky. I do like the look of them though!
